I understand you (American) guys do not get the awesomeness of open air festivals, but they are really cool, nothing beats watching some cool shows, camping, drinking with your buddies, BBQing, etc, for two or three days straight. But in the other hand we are getting old and metal festivals went out of control, Wacken is now a monstrosity with like 100k-120k people. So that's why some old metalheads came some years ago with the marvelous idea of making small scale metal festivals, more oriented to not so young people like us and family friendly, limited to 1000-2000 people, and while they can't have the crazy amount of cool bands playing in the big festivals, they have around 2 or 3 big international bands and the rest are smallish (mostly European) bands. I've been going for the past seven years to such festivals with my kids, we sleep in our van because my back needs some comfort these days, we BBQ, watch bands, the kids take care of me if I drink too much or if I fall down in the moshpit. I can only tell you they are awesome. And nowadays there are plenty of those small festivals in Europe.

Maybe one day I will bring my kids to Rock Am Ring or some stupid big ass festival like that just for the experience.

I went to Ozzfest 99 at the famous Gorge Amphitheater in Washington. Camped both the night before and the night of. The night before at the amphitheater was a Dave Matthews concert so the campground that night was a crazy mix of hippies and metal heads.
