I think it was 96-97 when my first band was one of the bigger bands in my shithole town. For a while we practiced upstairs in one of the old studio apartments above one of the main bar/clubs in town. That led to either the club owner or the sound guy coming up to our room once in a while asking if we could come downstairs and play because some band had canceled or whatever. We mostly said no but the time the sound guy came up and said both opening bands had canceled for this show of a band from Japan and asked if we could play, when he said it was Melt Banana, I immediately started breaking down my shit and packing it downstairs.

But to stay on topic….one night there were multiple people from other local bands hanging out in our space and the owner came up saying that all scheduled bands weren’t showing up and begged us to do something, we told him to go out and change the band names on the marquee to Free Beer and Naked Chicks and we would make something happen. If actually turned out pretty fun. A lot of people stayed since we only charged $3. We played some covers and just made a bunch of noise.

I never did anything fun like that up there but one of the guitarists in the band definitely used the old couch in an unlocked room down the hall more than a few times
