I'm struggling to remember what was the first actual "my money" purchase - the majority of my first CDs were gifts, or albums I borrowed from friends and asked my dad to copy as CD-Rs. I didn't get regular allowance or anything and I was way more likely to spend skrilla on a VHS tape at that age.

I think it was 1990. My parents were upgrading the home stereo for the first time since the late 70s which included the first CD player in our house. They let me and my sister each pick out one CD. Shortly after, I did the Columbia House and BMG thing, and while I tried to follow the rules of either paying or returning on time, within a year I had wracked up a bill with late fees of over $100 that ended up getting sent to collections. Someone actually came to our house and my mom essentially told them to fuck off as the person they were after was a 15 year old. So I ended up with 10 or so CDs that I never paid for.
