Agree with this but also don't disagree with Verno.

I really loved this show but I am surprised at what a phenomenon it's become.

I basically don't think children should be allowed to act, like it should be against the law to put kids in movies because THEY FUCKING SUCK AT THEIR JOBS but

I liked these kids especially El :( :(

I hear ya - hype is a hell of a thing

I saw one FB buddy say something nice about it, and then my gf put it on the teevee - I was excited to have been treated to something that seemed to come out of nowhere

anyway, I think the popularity is similar to the way Dazed & Confused found an audience in the 90s - kids who want a low-key glimpse into an earlier era

I really do appreciate the version of the '80s we see in ST - it feels much more authentic than what we saw in ET/Goonies/whatever because those were Hollywood movies that were trying to distinguish themselves from everyday life. or something. I haven't seen those reference movies in forever so I might be full of shit.

Dazed & Confused
exactly

i saw dazed and confused in a theater recently and there were 3-4 boozy wild girls in their early-mid 20's who made sure to hoot and holler and signal constantly that this movie was their jam. the audience(imo) laughed WAY too hard at most of the jokes but they laughed and yelled the fucking hardest. parker posey is on screen? stick your feet in the air and go YYYEEEEAA GIRL etc. when it was over, because everyone is a millennial it was kinda quiet and nervous and everyone was looking at each other, i leaned over the chairs diving me and the anthropologie/forever 21 crew and i kinda loudly went "So did you guys like it ?  "

CAUTION: REAL FUCKING SPOILERS

I just read this at the top of an article... the placement of their spoiler warning is incredible:
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
The villainous character actor talks finally playing the hero in ‘Stranger Things’ and says that Eleven may still be alive ‘in some form.’ [Warning: Spoilers]

Just finished it.

I actually think it's pretty obvious that they meant to leave the door open for Eleven to come back. Who else do you think Hopper is leaving the food in that box for at the end of the last episode? And Will puking live slugs and apparently accidentally zapping into the upside down is clearly planted in case they wanted to make a sequel with the same characters.
Anyway, I thought it was great. I also went in knowing pretty much nothing except that everyone seemed to love the show, so pretty much everything was a pleasant surprise. And I really think even if you take the 80s nostalgia and the winks and nods to the movies the show's inspired by out of the equation, it's just really well put together from top to bottom.

And really, the kid characters are the best part. And that shouldn't be fucking possible.

 echo chamber of pleasant-surprise praise

I just think the spoiler warning is hilarious because it's downstream of telling the reader that:
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
1. eleven is presumed dead
2. eleven is likely returning

like... what's left to spoil? they've already fucked over people who haven't seen the show (this was in a listing of articles, so it's announcing content), and they've fucked over people who have seen the first season but want to be on blackout about the second season

but yeah, I liked the two things you pointed out about el & will: things that tease at a continued story without being full-on sequel set-ups. even as non-sequel-set-ups, they gave us hints of a future that's filled with both hope and dread...

I fast forwarded through this thread to avoid spoilers. I'm on the second episode and can't fucking believe how good it is. Totally lived up to the hype. The score is fucking amazing also.

I think the big hype over the show is:
- Well done
- Original in structure compared to whatever else is on tv now
- Most tv this season sucks

Do you legit not like the show or are you just being a dick? One of my buds hates it because he can't stand the kids.

Finally got around to watching this, and all I can say is What the hell was I waiting for?

I can say more... It's been a long time since something moved me like ST did. The story/plot was nothing earth-shattering - I had pretty much figured out what was going on by the third episode. No, it was the characters and the actors' portrayals that was so goddamn spot-on. To say I was engrossed by their performances is no overstatement... I actually cried at a couple of times. Cried. Real tears. I can't remember the last time a show/movie had that effect on me. Just thinking of those scenes now has me welling up. Good god did they catch lightning in a bottle. If season 2 even matches it, it will be a miracle.

The BMX Bikes ridden are a more modern style using a 26t / 9t gear set rather than 44t / 18t.

Made it through the first episode of this dumb shit.

Retrowave Amblin 80's sci-fi/horror throwback for first level cult movie fans who haven't graduated past Robocop and Army of Darkness t-shirts.

Pass.
