Dude, okay - what the fuck happens in science world when someone makes a big ANNOUNCEMENT, and then the shit gets published or reviewed and it turns out to be obvious nonsense? What is the fucking point and how does that happen??

This LV99 shit is an example, although I could name a few - are people intentionally being deceptive, and if so WHAT do they get out of it?? Is that game over for a person's reputation??

i have one iconic story about overhyped science … people were too lazy/stupid/hype-blinded to do the ONE revelatory experiment that would shed light on their mistaken conclusions about some stupid microbes in an arsenic-rich lake, but instead it spiraled into a fucking NASA press conference about aliens… a GLOBAL spotlight on their fake story

when the truth came out, nobody cared. illusions were stripped away for me, and lord knows it hurt

there's a trailer on that site: the narration + background music is the most obnoxious thing I've seen in a while

this is the result of a collaboration between:
- a wildly hyped (but now struggling) synthetic biology ("synbio") company
- some head-up-their-own-ass artist types
...and they're trying to sell a $5000 jacket made from special (?) silk. the gimmick is that they specify what organism contributed to each thing they are selling, and in this case, that organism is "bacteria"

imagine a restaurant is asking $300 for a botique, bio-hacked salad and when you inquire what makes this salad so special, they excitedly tell you it was made from "plants"
