I feel like the “accent” issue is impossible to handle properly, unless you just say fuckit and pull an Amadeus

I don’t care about authenticity but we’ve got a movie about a french guy and all the accents are UK/US?

Ben Gazzara plays sort of the same role in Saint Jack, and it's also an absolute masterwork. Two of my favorites!

1970s women walking on the road while unearthly music plays behind them. There is really strange and transcendent beauty you can find in odd places in life.

The Exorcist should be in every conversation about the greatest films ever made. It shouldn't be in the genre ghetto because of its subject matter or approach.

People are drawn to stories about supernatural misery because they imply that there is a transcendental quality to human existence. Warnings or punishments are good enough, if they're the only examples that are left.

Stories about normal things can't be this beautiful.

Speaking of The Exorcist being a work of art, I feel like not enough people have seen it's (spiritual?) successor The Ninth Configuration. It was written and directed by Peter Blatty who wrote The Exorcist, and is an extension of the scene where Regan says "You're gonna die up there" to the astronaut and company.

The Ninth Configuration opens with the astronaut freaking out as he's about to go into space, screaming "There's nothing up there!" while he's carried away from the launch. He's then committed to a military insane asylum which is was converted from an old castle. It's starts out as a farce, but dives pretty heavily into philosophy and theology. It was written by Blatty as a sequel to Exorcist at a time when he was questioning his belief in God - around when his mother had passed.

The film didn't do well - and I remember something about it being pulled from theaters by Blatty for some sort of advertising contract infraction or something? I don't see that in the wiki write up, but it may have been in an interview.

It's really strange and it's on youtube in a decent quality:

Wolfen - slept through the first two thirds of the film, but what I saw was stylish and atmospheric. Very nice cinematography and mise-en-scene.

Sissy - 7.5/10
Influencer who was bullied as a kid finds herself on a hen weekend at the country house with her childhood bully, and things escalate into a slasher film. Great casting, you feel with the main character despite her doing horrible things. Couple of nice handmade effects.

I dug Wolfen a lot, but wonder if the reveal is considered a little problematic in modern times. It's also got a real slow pace, so definitely need to be in the mood for it.

Hackers ('95) - 7/10 enjoyment, 4/10 reeelapse score - I did not like this the first time around and found the soundtrack to be pretty awful - but fast forward 28 years, and it felt more like a warm blanket on a chilly fall evening. At least up until the climactic ending that consists of head-on shots of people in front of computers interspersed with cgi floating equations or the camera gliding around info towers. Afterwards, I looked up Stereo MCs on youtube and was quickly reminded why I never liked them.

The Rock ('96) - 7/10 - I was expecting to be a little more charmed by Cage and Connery, but ended up more interested in the slew of supporting actors I recognized. It even includes a tiny bit part by Jim "QAnon" Caviezel, which I only noticed when looking at IMDB. I can't say I'm a Bay fan, but this and Ambulance are both fun rides. I liked it more when I saw it decades ago.

Super Mario Bros. Movie ('23) - 4/10 - Every single music queue is so completely predictable and stale that it actively bothered me. Every aspect felt safe and saccharin, which is fine for a kids movie, but there was never a point where I was genuinely interested in what was happening. It's colorful, though, which is the only aspect I think is better than the 90's Mario Bros movie. That seems insane now that I've typed it out.

Prisoners ('13) - 8/10 - I put off watching this because I heard it's a pretty big bummer, which is fairly accurate. But it's not haunting - like Nil By Mouth, Come and See, Threads, or other flicks that can stay with you for a while. I like Gyllenhaal when he's a borderline psychopath, and most actors put in solid performances. Villenueve has yet to disappoint me, despite my high expectations, which is surprising.

Barnes and Noble has their 50% off Criterion sale going, so I picked up After Hours, Targets, and Once False Move - looking forward to those arriving. I've also got some things from Vinegar Syndrome due here at the end of the month, including Wakaliwood Supa Action Volume 1 from AGFA.

(The Bird with Crystal Plumage)
I'm not sure they 100% fit since it's been a few years since I watched them, Whee's suggestion reminded me of A Lizard in Woman's Skin and Baba Yaga.
