To think I thought his extension was risky given only one year of elite production. Probably the biggest triple crown threat since Bonds.

Anyone following this double-header? Porcello might not make it through the first inning of the first game. Yikes.

I'm kinda surprised Leyland didn't take Porcello out after Kinsler's triple. He's probably thinking "fuck it, we're getting killed today anyways, might as well not waste my bullpen in the process".

Absolutely. The only alternative is to start game two after your bullpen has already thrown over 8 innings.

The lapse of offense on this team is starting to stink of '08.

Verlander is in game two. He's pitched at least 8 in every start

Ah, that's nice to know.

Rick Porcello, 1+ innings, 10 hits, 9 runs. Leaves the game with two runners on base. Not sure how many runs are earned because there was one error in the first.

I'm glad we paid that signing bonus for Porcello. He's been worth every penny.

Calm the hell down, he's already had two 14 W seasons and he's still only 23 years old. He had one horrendous game after two awesome starts.

I'm still amazed Leyland plays him at all in the first half. He's a monster in the second half, but just an abortion at the plate before then. Plus, he's a shitty defender.

I was watching the Yankees/SAWX game yesterday when Fox cut away to the Humber perfect game. By the time the coverage returned to the NY/Bos game, it had gone from 9-1 to 9-8. I really don't see how Bobby V is gonna have a job much longer......

Will never get a favorable strike zone from that ump again.

Also, Drew Smyly: the AL ERA leader.

Drew Smyly made me think of this guy:
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
Image

in 28 career complete games for John Smiley from 1986 to 1997, he threw fewer than 100 pitches seven times. He also had 11 other games in which he was taken out in the ninth inning without having yet gotten to 100 pitches.
Which led to this:
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
During his brief (1919 innings pitched) career, Zane Smith walked very few batters and almost never gave up home runs.

Of his 35 complete games, a remarkable 16 went for shutouts, and he completed eight of those games with fewer than 100 pitches thrown.
Then this:
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
Here's a number that will blow you away: during the course of his career, Greg Maddux had 29 complete games with fewer than 100 pitches thrown.

That's 29 complete games right through the heart of the Steroid Era.
