"I just saw "Avatar"
Fucking incredible. There were a few hacky and cliche moments, but in the big picture that's all forgiven. Easily the best movie I've ever seen.
By an hour and a half into the movie I totally wanted to fuck that blue chick."

Cameron spent how long again writing his opus, and it's essentially a Pocahontas Mad Lib. Dumb.

This is one of those movies that quickly turn to shit in my mind after viewing. But, still...those 3D dragons, I want to tame one through personal combat and ram my dick into its mane-interface and have adventures in 3D.

At the same time, I am fearful about this 3D explosion. I don't want most movies to be in 3D.

Not to totally trivialize things, but can't the Avatar story archetype (same as Pocahontas, Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai, Dune, etc) be considered a widespread template by now the same way others are?

Sure.

I'm just surprised it took him, what, 20 years to write. Also, that some people, including Cameron himself, are touting the thing as so brave, imaginitive, and unique. I have seen 11-year-old neophytes at a gaming table construct better, fueled only by Mountain Dew and social ostracization.

You're right on all counts. Note that he wrote the treatment in 3 weeks in '95, then shelved it until CGI characters came into being (seeing Gollum was his "green light"), then he cut fat from the treatment, threw in some Middle East allegory, and that's pretty much it. He is up front about the story being classic and old-school, and the "revolution" has always been in the visuals. I'll see this movie more times in the theater than any other because that's the only place it's worth a damn.

Despite all the weakness in the story, I still give him credit for 1) not being blatantly offensive in the ways Transformers 2 was, and 2) actually attempting to say something pertinent. High-stakes blockbusters simply do not do that.

I still have not seen it. I did get pulled into seeing Sherlock Holmes and realized I'm just too hyper-sensitive to all the ass clowns around me to fully enjoy any movie in the theatre. If just one person within earshot is talking, experience ruined. Some fucker kicking the back of my seat? Pissed.

I'd need to go the tenth week at a 10AM Sunday show to really appreciate it.

MAYBE. But when you do it as cheesy and boring as this movie did? Unfuckingforgivable. SFX were fine - I wasn't ensnared by it like everyone else, though; that's just me. I'm glad people just enjoyed the visuals alone and not give a shit about the story, like the people I saw it with. Had I been by myself I would have walked out.

I can dig it, Ray! I know you don't really hate fun.

Here's the FULL sex scene from the script, hehehe...
SPOILERSPOILER_SHOW
He puts his face close to hers. She rubs her cheek against
his. He kisses her on the mouth. They explore each other.
Then she pulls back, eyes sparkling.

NEYTIRI
"Kissing is very good. But we have
something better."

She pulls him down until they are kneeling, facing each other
on the faintly glowing moss.
Neytiri takes the end of her queue and raises it. Jake does
the same, with trembling anticipation. The tendrils at the
ends move with a life of their own, straining to be joined.
MACRO SHOT -- The tendrils INTERTWINE with gentle
undulations.
JAKE rocks with the direct contact between his nervous system
and hers. The ultimate intimacy.
They come together into a kiss and sink down on the bed of
moss, and ripples of light spread out around them.
THE WILLOWS sway, without wind, and the night is alive with
pulsing energy as we DISSOLVE TO --
LATER. She is collapsed across his chest. Spent. He
strokes her face tenderly.

JAKE
"Neytiri, you know my real body is far
away, sleeping."

She raises up, placing her fingertips to his chest --

NEYTIRI
"This body is real."
(she touches his forehead)
"This spirit is real."

I'm guessing when it comes out on blu-ray DVD, first there will be a crappy version with film only and no extras. Then several months later, a deluxe version with extras, interviews, etc. Then several months later one with the deleted sex scene.
