Today is the first fall-like rainy day. Have all the doors and windows wide open, got nice and stoney, listening to Through Silver In Blood and reading. I haven't relaxed like this in ages

since i'm like distractible and almost uncomfortably close to being on the spectrum, whenever i see motion in the corner of my field of vision, my brain makes it an imperative to look; generally this reflex makes me look like i'm really into squirrels, to the point where you'd feel comfortable calling the cops
walking to the law building, i normally go through what i guess you'd call sorority row? this morning, i see some motion out of the corner of my eye—and am rewarded with a window full of tity

Got into a flame war with the guitar player from twelvefootninja
renewed funding means my lab will get to keep going for another 3 years, I guess
doesn't really feel like there's much to celebrate since my office's outward-facing wall is already 100% windows and there's really nowhere to go but down from here. this building doesn't even have corner offices..

finally completed and delivered a corporate counsel pitch, which was at least warmly received before it goes to the board for review
which is ultimately step one in going back to southerly cauliflowia

I just had a delightful time re-ordering checks online
I was tempted to add this clip-art pizza-with-slice-levitating-out fluorish but ultimately chickened out - still, feels good knowing I could if I wanted to
it's really sad that only 3 good things worth mentioning happened to any of us in the last year
anyway i'm pretty sure I won a large grant to do gene editing in humans (tech for that, no humans involved), which is 4 years of support, granted to a team of 4 labs that I brought together and will coordinate. this would be the first substantial "win" of my post-training career. will probably fall on my face but at least I tricked at least one panel of experts with my crazy proposal.

check out this military guy going full sci-fi (and getting laughed at by scientists) at 1h24m:
this was back in 2015... military guy is asking how long it'll take other countries to catch up with the US on this shit - SURPRISE - all it takes is a lack of scruples and then you've got an edited baby Private Febtus, super soldier of the future. and indeed some idiot in china tried to make HIV-proof babies last year, and now the world has two girls with DNA that's mutated to some shit that nobody intended and with consequences that are a total toss-up. I don't mean to imply that the US is actually ahead of the game... very soon the whole world will be able to make edited babies reliably and reproducibly, and it'll be as widely available as IVF is. buckle up?!?!?
turning adult febtus into universal soldier requires "somatic editing" and is much tougher - that is what I am trying to do and why I will probably fail
to his credit, I love that the military guy actually says "trans-human"
(all threads lead back to enchroaching dystopia)
