Rowland S. Howard

Unless I've shared irl time with a person I usually have a sense of disconnection with them no matter how much I appreciate their work, admire what they've done for their medium, etc. For instance, I'm still shaking my head over the fact that Dennis Hopper is dead and thinking about Frank Booth/Feck/et all on the daily, but it's not really bumming me out exactly. When Rowland S. Howard died though I got in to a huge funk over it. For me, it seemed like he had so much left to say and to have persevered through so much personal shit and then die of anything BUT a relapse in to heroin addiction and subsequent overdose seemed so anticlimactic. In one of his last interviews he said that he had never been so excited about his own material before and then he died without demoing it or playing it live to be bootlegged in any capacity, so those songs went with him. By the time he started having his health problems he had been relegated to opening slots of Aussie pub-rock bands who were just doing shitty impersonations of his style, it was a goddamn travesty.

Great, I've been bummed out anew. Thanks reeeelapse.

i cried the night dio died, listening to holy diver in the car, singing as loud as i possibly could.

i was super bummed when mitch hedberg died because a few months earlier i skipped going to see him and now regret it.

other than that, i can't really recall anything recently that made me that upset. it sucks when people die but for the most part if i haven't met them i don't feel emotionally connected.

I'd never heard of this Mitch Hedberg guy, but now I'm watching his stuff on Youtube, and I really have no idea why I'm laughing so hard.

Well... I'll say this, after roughly 15 minutes on Youtube I get the impression I've already heard every funny joke the man's ever written.

EDIT

We can't have a new page starting like this. Lemme fix that.

That was the first modern wrestling death that really got me upset. Probably because we heard all the stories of how he overcame drug addiction, pills, etc. but apparently the life on the road and the steroids really did a number on his heart. After that, I really wasn't surprised by anybody in wrestling kicking the bucket, except for the whole Benoit incident. But I got over that once I saw the Relapse photoshop thread...

As far as musicians, Dio's death was pretty upsetting, but not that unexpected, especially after they canceled their tour just a couple of weeks before.

Even though I hated him on the Packers, I was a big Reggie White fan as a kid, so his death was pretty shitty too.

I stand corrected, that was the first musician's death that really hit me hard. I knew it was coming, but I still held out hope that maybe he'd turn his life around and reunite with AiC. I was a little too young when Cobain died to really "get it," but I remember watching MTV News and being disturbed, especially when they played the audio of Courtney reading his suicide note. But yeah, Staley really bummed me out for about 2 weeks, although the soon-after death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and her media saturation made me glad that Layne's death didn't end up being some tabloid media circus.

EDIT: Can't believe I forgot about Chuck and Dimebag. Dimebag just for the sheer insanity of the circumstances, and how Pantera was the ultimate "gateway band" for me as a kid, and Chuck because he was a genius and I really wanted to hear what he'd continue to come up with.

EDIT again: 2PAC! Fuck. I remember thinking "Oh, he survived multiple gun shots before, I'm sure he'll be fine with this one too." Really did not see him dying from that. Wasn't shocked when BIG died 6 months later.

Mr.Rogers and especially Dio, cause I never got to see them live and missed them in Chicago last year while a bunch of my friends went. I've been kicking myself ever since and its agonizing now that I missed out and the opportunity is gone for good.

When I was 9 or 10 I was genuinely shocked and bummed out by Kurt Cobain thinking "damn they'll never do another album", couldn't believe it, don't care now but it was something then during my kid years.

probably Dio and Joey Ramone.

I know I'm going to get called a fag for this but I did shed at least one tear when I heard Michael Jackson passed away.

Jim Varney, too. I really miss that guy.
