I tried using chatgpt to try to distill my job responsibilities to help with a more concise resume and it titled the conversation "Nurse Burnout and Grief".

james, you once argued that people are largely culturally programmed to think of music as "happy" or "sad" etc., and I strongly disagreed
this research says you were right! everybody hates dissonance equally, but the "major = happy" / "minor = sad" thing seems to be a western cultural phenomenon
However, our new research shows that western associations such as the major-happy/minor-sad distinction, is strongly influenced by the cultural background of the listeners.
After conducting experiments with two remote tribes in Northwest Pakistan and the United Kingdom, we have discovered that Western emotional concepts linked with specific modes are not relevant for participants unexposed to Western music, particularly when other emotional cues such as tempo, timbre and loudness, are kept constant.
At the same time, harmonic style alone has the ability to colour the emotional expression in music, but only if it taps into the cultural connotations of the listener.

I remember those conversations. Ironic because I'm definitely nowhere near as certain as I was back then, and I cant even remember why I was so sure. Ill check out that link.
I guess back then I thought that everything which could possibly be considered cultural was constructed external to the organism. I've absolutely reversed on that, and I'm pretty sure I have no fucking idea how to tell the difference between OEM/aftermarket epistemological objects.
I never listened to the fountain soundtrack, sorry. I'm really bad about stuff like that.
