My two month obsession with jazz is seriously fucking me up -- my sleep, my speech, my ability to finish sentencYou're welcome to suffer along:

This record has blown me away every time I've listened to it. Definitely one of my faves from 2011. Peter Evans Quartet. I can't find my favorite songs on Youtube, but this is still beautiful as fuck.

Here's Peter Evans' other band Mostly Other People Do the Killing. This track is very Ornette, but way more intentionally all over the place. This track is older, but their new record, The Coimbra Concert, is all kinds of sick. Another fave of 2011.

This shit is fucking insane. Yosuke Yamashita. Easily the greatest jazz musician this country has ever produced. His awesomeness cannot be overstated.

Some of the best, most unsettling music ever recorded. Some bands I hear and think, "These guys are fucked up", but when I listen to Eric Dolphy I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind. I've had more people ask me to turn this off than the fucking Brainbombs.

I'm not huge on drumless jazz, and this has somewhat of a Euro feel to it (maybe because of the way the violin and squeezebox are used together?) but this is ok. I like the bassist. You can tell he wants to weird it up more than he's allowed to.

Me too, man. That shit is way too fusion-y for me. I think the way into jazz is Coltrane: Giant Steps or Transition and from there to Interstellar Space. Once you get into that record, there's no turning back.

Yeah, I gotta give Miles another shot. So far the only record of his I really like is A Tribute to Jack Johnson, but it's been so long since I've listened to it that I might hate it now...

I hope you had the common decency to tell them, "please leave the hall, xasthur fans". What an amazing record.

At one point in my life I listened to Bird's In Chicago-Live at the Pershing Hotel every night for about 3 months. Sometime during the performance (I forget which song) there is a clattering from on stage or in the audience. I've always wondered what it is. My brother is convinced it's a coaster that falls off of a table.

I consider myself a non jazz snob, in that I inherited a giant collection when an uncle kicked off about 20 years ago. I just began exploring it all, sometimes founds stuff unremarkable, and sometimes found stuff remarkable.

I think jazz scholars tend to blow jizz over ever release ever for the legends of jazz, and for me I think there's loads of un remarkable Miles albums, loads of dull charlie parker and even snooze worthy coltrane--- but it's awesome finding the stuff that clicks for you, and there is some amazing music in the genre. I think ultimately that's what jazz is about--having the balls to try and go to new places sometimes failing, sometimes idling, but all the effort worth the times when it's something amazing.

It's like the greats are baseball players--who the greats with 300 averages still fail 7/10 times. I'm not sure what the averages for jazz players, and success/fail is subjective to the listener to a large degree, but I think the idea stands.

Haven't been for a while, but use to check out local jazz jam sessions---kinda same deal, sometimes hear some great stuff, sometimes just background to nurse a beer.

Jazz also has a built in culture and attitude, just as metal has it. Ultimately for both the music needs to stand on its own.

Fuck, man. That record is priceless. Until I heard Out To Lunch, Black Saint was my favorite jazz record. It still might be.

ZH, you're totally right. Jazz is such a nebulous, endless genre that, even once you're committed to it, you're guaranteed to find as much music that you hate as you are music that blows you away. I think a lot of people avoid jazz in the same way they avoid science or history -- it's just too daunting and demanding. And really, getting into jazz for me was more a learning experience than it was a listening experience. It's a truly fucked up art form and, along with the Fleshlight, easily one of the best things America has given the world.

I was lucky enough to go to college in a small town in the Pacific Northwest and witness some jazz greats come through the area. Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter. Good times.

Jazz is the tits. I don't know much, but of the 100+ albums I own only a handful are duds. My most recent favorite jazz album is Eric Dolphy Out There which sees Ron Carter playing a cello - it brings me to my knees.

My favorite...
-Mingus is Live at Antibes, featuring Dolphy.
-Trane is the Live at the Village Vanguard boxset also featuring the Dolphster.
-Monk is the Live at Carnegie Hall featuring Trane.
-Miles is hard to pick, probably Miles Smiles; def. something with Tony Williams.
-trad jazz is Count Basie, who just plain swings like crazy.

I haven't heard this. It's fucking sick, man.

Have you heard Lifetime by Tony Williams? It's pretty rad.
