That's a mistake
Also explains why he'd prefer to live in ignorance because he's a control freak which prefers ignorance and self righteous feelings to reality

its just that faggy sneering redditor intonation that i'll never quite get over. i feel like mister burns going through seven layers of high tech prestige security to find a broken screen door hanging off the hinges of my nuclear power plant
why would anyone want to sound like that
That's how you end up controlled

If you experience mostly shit, you will stay longer hoping for that squirt of dopamine you remember from the first stage of the habit. It's designed exactly like a casino. It turns us into hardworking, foraging squirrels.
Exactly like the description of the "first matrix" which wasn't effective.
that all tracks
I presume you've heard about how snack food is not engineered to be thoroughly satisfying, rather it's engineered to make you keep eating more of it. if there's just enough shitty aftertaste, you go back for more?
I love a well-curated reddit/twitter experience, but you're totally right that it doesn't tap into that same need to feel super engaged (squirl brain)
I've never been able to articulate this idea in an air-tight way, but I think another strong instance of motivating toxicity is around gossip. like... we talk shit about each other because it feels good to feel superior. but there are costs when that gets back to the subject of the gossip, right? so I think there's this market that gives you the toxic thrills without the interpersonal blowback: tabloids. I think the british royal family might serve the same purpose, even before media existed: it's a group of rich layabouts that everyone can gossip about, potentially displacing the in-group blowups that would otherwise take place. it certainly seems like that's their function in the post-tabloid world
(RIP princess diana, ofc, who paid the ultimate price of all that toxicity )
Holy SHIT I feel bad that Russ ended up a conspiracy theorist.
What a waste of a Berklee education

The "react" subgenre of metamedia is fucking weird. There's an entire subgenre which is just black people saying that they like songs.
Like a room full of african-american guys who hear Dragonforce for the first time, and they go "Hey man... ya know what, this is pretty good!"
I've never once seen one of these videos where the reactor doesn't like the media they're presented with. I think the purpose it serves is to make a person feel validated in their taste?
There's obviously nothing wrong with "Asian grandpa learns about classic TOOL songs" but it is really funny and revealing re: the audience... like why is that so compelling for people ?? it's kinda sweet in a way I guess... if only it seemed more sincere??

That's absolutely 99% of that content, and they all review the same stuff. I had a friend link me to a gen z black kid seemingly getting his mind blown by bohemian Rhapsody back in 2020 and fell down the reactor-hole. Such a bizarre business. The only guys that do that shit and even remotely come across as not just clocking in at the "make 40 year old white dudes feel relevant" factory are the two dudes behind Lost In Vegas, they sure as shit are happy to be like "yeah, this does nothing for me"

I should re-state that I have no objections to this phenomenon and I think it's a good thing overall!! It's just funny and strange
I wonder why "65 year old Appalachian white woman reacts to rap songs" isn't a genre
maybe somebody tried it and it didn't go well

I had a dental hygienist once rambling on about how Shania Twain was really nice to people and Julia Robert's was a bitch and the actually dentist passively aggressively told her to shut up and finish.

I was scanning through it and landed on a part where the cops say they assumed the place was empty because they didn't hear anyone and then a teacher says that they and the students are instructed in an active shooter situation they should be as quiet as possible. So I other words don't watch it.
