you're spot on - the problem with the PUA thinking is not a practical one but a higher-level-thought one; it's pretty air tight on the id+ego levels - it does work but the price of admission is to view the world as a videogame where cheevos = getting your dick wet, every human is merely an AI to manipulate, and there's absolutely no such thing as love or empathy.

well, Geoff, you've always been a guy who bames on easy mode, right? the PUA guys are trying to bame on ultra-hard mode where they bang the most attractive females (as determined by MAXIM magazine) by whatever means necessary. it's not like there's a long game there - they have just decided that they want to have sex with these women and that's enough motivation to look like a clown and foster a persona dedicated to manipulation and scheming.

absolutely do not read up on the PUA stuff, you're not missing out on anything but a cynical, solipsistic outlook

I'm with you on this one. But the key thing you have to realize is that the first wave of PUA guys were straight-up fucking NERDS. They never played in a band, or spray painted the walls, or anything else discussed in Black Flag songs which often contributes to helping malcontents like ourselves get laid. What they did do was apply their autastic gifts for analyzing data to interpersonal relations, in order to come up with a scientific method for attaining vagina.

Honestly, Neil Strauss' book The Game is a really good read. I have zero interest in PUA but I picked it up because I'm a sucker for quality non-fiction about somebody immersing themselves in subculture (e.g. Among The Thugs, Salvation on Sand Mountain, Newjack, etc.). And while it's not up to the level of those classics, it's still well-written and interesting, and will give you a lot of insight into the formative days of this phenomenon.

Also: Ross, I feel you should apply your scientific acumen to pursuing the personality type james and I have identified, I feel this may represent a new subcategory of Ass Burgers which I hope to see in the next edition of the DSM.

your insight was solid and I don't have any answers or additional insight... basically I think they're theater kids and I am getting a sneaking suspicion that the adamalien fedora guy is gay or bi or a furry or something so he gets some slight sympathy for bearing that cross. in a broader way it's definitely a case of IRL actors that seems to overlap with the PUA circle in that sense
