I would just like to take a moment and say that, as a high school English teacher, few things make me as wondrously, joyously filled with disappointment and disgust than when I see a fifteen-year-old read Maya Angelou and think that they have somehow eclipsed the zenith of profundity. Culturally and socially significant? Sure, absolutely. Talented? Christ no

A Dream Deferred

by Langston Hughes

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?

This was taught in my poetry 101 class in college. COLLEGE. Pretty sure I personally wrote more interesting shit during my 8th grade creative writing seminars.

Also on Facebook posted a poem I wrote under Dr. Maya Angelou's name. I hope it rises to become one of her best unknown works to date.
