what's the strongest cross-media TITLE word

Portal: notable band & game, but no decent movie

Thief: notable movie & game, but no decent band

Repulsion: notable band & movie, but no decent game

some more: Descent lacks a band, Journey lacks a movie, and DOOM...

cross-media adaptations don't count, which is why DOOM is not the answer via the movie (that thread is what reminded me to make this thread)

"immortal" is a near miss in a few ways: clearly the band is a lock, but The Immortal video game is a boundary case IMO, and Tarsem's lame movie was called Immortals

the ultra-winner would have a book, too

WHIPLASH feels like a bit of a stretch:

I can't deny that people care about these guys' debut at the very least:

but the game is tragically "forgotten"

I guess this is the word to beat

My brain keeps trying to break into subtitles

This might wind up being a case where we all discover some obscure band on the archives and all mutually agree that they are really solid and overlooked

Leviathan?
The black metal band
Books from 1615 and 1992
Movies from 1989 and 2012
Some game from 2013

Leviathan is decent but I am not sure the game or book clear the bar

https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/6050678 - 90k reviews, not too shabby (holy shit pale fire has only 50k!)

for movies, it should be anything with a wide release OR some reputable indie/foreign release

:pizza: Leviathan is pretty strong, probably at least as good as Whiplash

I really thought EXODUS might be a contender, but i remembered that the 60s movie is called TEN COMMANDMENTS and none of the other movies called EXODUS seem too notable

ZOMBI might be a really strong one - even though its almost cheating, the synth band's name is clearly inspired by the movie.

Zombi/2 - classic argento/romero stuff
Zombi (PA) - best band EVER besides black sabbath
Zombi the old game - there is also a modern version of this which was well recieved but not exactly a smoking gun for this thread

This is very much inspired by the movie ZOMBI (dawn of the dead) but not an actual adaptation legally speaking

I dunno this is a very shaky case and i will defer to the opinion of the judges but it's so so close

damn dude

yeah that's really solid - I had idea about that game, haha

I agree with you re: all the "inspiration" things but I don't think they're disqualifying

that kinda reminds me of the game S.T.A.L.K.E.R. inspired by the tarkovsky movie

is there a good band called SORCERER?? Im sure there are 48 of them on the archives - is a SINGLE ONE of them good???

Because you've got a classic Friedkin movie by that name, and an old Infocom game. Ive never played it but every infocom title kinda has a good reputation by default amongst hipster types.

the funny thing about this exercise is it's sort of reasonable to sort wheat from chaff when it comes to movies & bands

I really have no clue how to define the cutoff for bames - it's just a totally different media universe

FEAR is a pretty well-loved punk band... there was also a game in the 2000s which I think was pretty well received. Looks like there's a few movies called FEAR but none of em are exactly oscar winners.

I dont know why this game has captivated my baby monkey brain

I'd say Zombi counts - Dawn of the Dead was released in Italy a few months before the US titled as Zombi.

Cloak & Dagger:
Movie | TV Show + Comic (same property) | Game | Band

This is not a single word, so it does not qualify. Also, I am not very familiar with the band, but there's been a bunch with that name - just not very notable.

Yakuza:
Movie (Sidney Pollack/Paul Schrader joint) | A shit ton of games by SEGA| Band

Technically, the movie's title is The Yakuza

Freeway:
Rapper | Movie | Atari Game

Others that could fit, but definitely not strongest: Spellcaster (Sega Game/Portland Band/Richard Band flick), Metalstorm (3d movie from 80s, a few bands, NES Game), Lifeforce (SHMUP, Tobe Hooper flick, a bunch of nobody bands), Siege (great Canuck flick, band is obvious, game: more might exist beyond Rainbow Six: Siege?)

Phobia is semi-notable if you count Indian cinema (it got a sequel) and mediocre indie games (it's very mediocre)

Macabre is a.) an upcoming video game that doesn't look terrible and b.) the movie that arguably popularized the horror film promotional gimmick craze: you got a Lloyds life insurance certificate with every ticket in case you died of fright. The movie stunk on ice but whatever, and Thurston Howell from Gilligan's Island was in it

Yakuza? The movie (The Yakuza to be fair) did badly both critically and financially on release BUT Robert Mitchum did a damn good job and honestly I love it just so damn much, and it's got a decent following as a japanoir curiosity

Mayhem is close, but the game was so pointless it killed its studio

And it may have come out under a different title but Dark Angel is a Dolph Lundgren joint and I will go to the mat for that man forever

"Dark Angel" reminds me... I didn't even think to consider TV. NOT HIGH ART (in contrast to video games!!!)

great entries, Hunter! Cloak & Dagger is very much welcome here - that's a solid entry. I'm also interested in best "phrase".

I think Yakuza might up there with Zombi as current front-runner? totally fine with dropping "a" or "the" as needed... I think a singular/plural mismatch is disqualifying though?

Some of these have a bunch of entries, cross-media wise - although I'm not sure if quantity is considered strong:

PARASITE
RAMPAGE
KILLERS
EXCALIBUR
